Firmness, honestly: what soft, medium and firm actually mean

Mattress firmness is not standardised. One maker's medium is another's firm, which is why the same person can buy two "medium" mattresses and hate one of them. We rate ours on a five-point scale and we publish what each point means in practice: soft is roughly a 3 out of 10 on the industry scale, medium is a 5 to 6, firm is an 8. If you sleep on your side you probably want soft to medium; on your back, medium to medium-firm; on your front, firm. Weight matters more than most guides admit. Two people of very different weights will experience the same mattress differently, and a zoned hybrid handles that better than a uniform foam.
