Looking after performance fabric without ruining it

Performance weaves are treated to resist staining, and the treatment is what most people accidentally strip off. Blot, never rub — rubbing pushes the spill through the weave and past the treated surface. Use a clean, dry, light-coloured cloth and work from the outside of the mark inwards. Water is usually enough. If it is not, a drop of clear washing-up liquid in warm water will handle most things. Avoid anything solvent-based, anything with bleach, and any "upholstery shampoo" that foams enthusiastically. Vacuum weekly with the upholstery head. Most fabric wear is not from spills; it is from grit sitting in the weave and cutting the fibres every time someone sits down.
