Why we still use eight-way hand-tied springs on some frames

Sinuous springs are cheaper, faster and perfectly good. We use them on most of our range and we are not embarrassed about it. But on the deep-seat frames, where the seat is over 24 inches and the cushion is a feather blend, we still hand-tie. The reason is edge support: a hand-tied deck holds its shape at the front rail, which is where a deep seat gets sat on hardest and where a sinuous deck eventually dips. It adds about four hours of labour per frame. On a sofa you will own for fifteen years, it is the difference between re-cushioning once and re-cushioning three times.
